The Tantalus is of typical form however it is of rare miniature size measuring only 22cm high x 26cm wide. The Tantalus is made from white onyx with scrolling ormolu mounts and an ormolu hinged carry handle. The carry handle is beautifully engraved with scrollwork and blossoming flowers and engraved 'The Tantalus' to one side and 'Betjemann's Patent London' to the other. To the front a small retailer's ormolu plaque reads 'Alexander Clark, Fenchurch Street, London'. Antique Silver Gilt Vanity Box veneered in stunning Amboyna. From our Vanity boxes, we are delighted to offer this stunning Amboyna veneered vanity box. The box with quadrant brass edging and matching escutcheon surrounding the Amboyna veneered exterior with side flush mounted recessed handles. The box is labelled with "Joseph Rodgers & Sons" of Sheffield, cutler to her Majesty" with exquisitely engraved silver-gilt lids upon glass bottles by London Silversmith, Thomas Johnson. The lock plate is stamped with the registration number and makers mark Chubb & Son, locksmiths to her majesty. The lid features a fold-down letter compartment with a removable mirror behind it. The base has a fabulous assortment of thirteen superb-cut glass bottles with exquisitely engraved sterling silver gilt & pierced jars. Unusually, the back five jars rise when the box is opened, a rare and desirable addition to this vanity box. The front features two drawers, one is vacant while the other is for storing jewellery; containing a removable accoutrements pad with various tools. This silver-gilt vanity box comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key. Standard Aquarium desk lighter designed by Dunhill. Very rare standard size Aquarium desk petrol lighter, designed by Dunhill back in the 1949. This mechanical lift arm lighter has been designed in England after the world war II. Has been individually crafted as a one of a kind piece by recycling the perspex lucite from the destroyed war airplanes. Composed by four carved pieces and polished steel parts. This example is virtually in mint condition and barely used, showing absolutely no traces of any wear. Weight: 460 Grams, (168.34 Dwt). Measures: 101 mm by 78 mm by 51 mm ( 3.98 x 3.11 x 2.0 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark and signed, "DUNHILL LIGHTER MADE ENGLAND". Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street.
